Introduction to Computer Science Courses

Course Overview

This course is a survey of computer science, computational thinking, and the role of technology in society from historical, gender, and cultural perspectives. You will learn to write small programs in Python and construct written arguments about how technology influences modern culture.

No previous computer science experience is necessary!

A minimum of a B is required for students wanting to take the next CS course, CS 164.

This course is approved for the Guaranteed Transfer (GT) Pathways program. A minimum grade of C is required for the credit to transfer.

Major Topics

We will explore a range of cultural and technical subjects, including:

  • Culture: The history of computing, bias in data and technology, AI’s societal impact, and cybersecurity.
  • Coding: Python fundamentals such as functions, loops, conditionals, strings, and data structures (lists, dictionaries etc).
